Mochtar Riady’s career in banking started in 1960 when he gathered together a group of investors to acquire a small local bank. Subsequently he moved to Bank Buana in 1964 and in 1970 to Panin Bank. Each bank that had previously been in a weak condition was turned around into a sound financial institution.

In 1975 Mochtar joined Bank Central Asia (BCA), then a small private bank and helped develop it to become Indonesia’s largest private bank. He was instrumental in the introduction of the first bank card system in Indonesia.

In 1991 he created LippoBank from a merger of two smaller banks. He remains chairman of LippoBank which now has 392 branches throughout Indonesia and 663 ATM machines.
Mochtar’s philosophy has been that he is in the business of trust. He offers a place where depositors feel their money is safe.

He has always embraced innovation and is constantly on the look out for new technology and processes that can benefit customers. Following the financial monetary crisis, LippoBank had to be restructured. He was the only owner of a restructured bank to invest new funds of his own to enable him and his family to retain their rights to ownership. LippoBank is a unit of the Lippo Group which has wide investments both in Indonesia and elsewhere across Asia Pacific.

His remaining dream for LippoBank is to restore it to be a strong financial institution managed by professional executives and owned by a diverse group of shareholders and that can play its full roll in the development of business in Indonesia.
